Scope:

The Liquid Rocket Certification Subcommittee of the Reliability, Maintainability, and Supportability Committee of the Society of Automotive Engineers is advocating an alternate approach to the current methodology employed to qualify (U.S. Air Force) or certify (NASA) liquid rocket engine systems. In the remainder of this document, the NASA term "certify" will be used interchangeably with the Air Fore designation "quality." The recommended new approach is needed to achieve specific objectives of new engine programs which, for example, stipulate quantified requirements for high levels of reliability that cannot be validated with the necessary confidence in a timely or cost-effective manner by present methods.
